1987 Heritage Softail Classic

In 1984 Harley debuted the first Softail; the FXST was a Chopper styled bike straight from the factory
and was powered with Harley-Davidson’s new, more powerful, more reliable, and more oil tight
Evolution motor. It created a lot of buzz from the riding public and started Harley on a path to recovery
but there were many who craved the more traditional Harley “FL” look and in 1986, HD responded with
the new FLST. The bike got some attention but without much chrome and no saddlebags it did not quite
hit the mark. Then is 1987, they really started something with the release of the FLSTC Heritage Classic!
Chrome motor covers feeding into the chrome staggered dual exhaust, chrome passing lamps
surrounding the massive 7” chrome headlamp bucket, the Softail frame that mimicked a classic, clean
hard tail look while secretly offering the rider modern comfortable suspension, heavy weight leather
saddlebags that seemed to spring new from the 1950’s, and a best in the business 2-tone paint job.
Everything about the bike said “Heritage Classic”. It didn’t have to scream it; it was obvious to everyone
who looked. And everyone did look!
This first year original Heritage Classic is an exceptional example with several “period appropriate “
accessories that can be retained or removed. While it currently has an upgraded carburetor and cam,
the original parts have been retained in case one preferred to return it to stock.
